Answer: There are several important differences between Monroe County Youth Soccer's travel and recreational programs. These differences include:
Players who participate in the travel program must have an exceptionally keen interest in playing soccer and improving their skills.
Travel soccer means added commitment on the part of the player and family. All teams practice at least twice a week during the season and have one or two games per weekend. In addition, teams will typically play in one or two weekend tournaments each season. It is the commitment of time and effort that most clearly differentiates travel from recreational soccer. Players and families with major time conflicts need to be aware of the commitment level required and make the appropriate decision.
There are also time commitments expected of parents. MCYS requires all parents to volunteer 10 hours per season or 20 hours over the course of the year (fall and spring seasons). The volunteer buyout is $20 per hour ($200 for one season or $400 for both). This might involve stuffing envelopes, directing the parking of cars at games or tournaments, or working phones.
Travel players generally play 5 games at Karst Farm Park and 5 games away, plus one or two tournaments.
Practice for travel soccer teams normally begins in early August with games usually beginning around Labor Day Weekend. Some teams participate in August tournaments. This year, we are expecting that all of our teams will participate in a club-sponsored Labor Day Tournament. The fall season usually ends the last weekend in October. The spring season runs from early March through the end May. Most of our teams participate in at least one tournament in late May or early June. Teams are formed in June to play the following fall and spring seasons. Your child is expected to play both seasons.
Travel teams are formed first by age, ability and roster size considerations. Friends, neighborhoods and school association are not how teams are formed. The Director of Soccer and the age group coaches determine each roster.
