Westside United – 0
Cutters ’91 White – 1
Goal Scorers: Derwydd M. (2)
May 7, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, IN -- The Cutters ’91 White team returned home to Bloomington
with their heads held high after a very convincing win the day before in Terre
Haute. With their coach back roaming the sidelines, they continued to play
with the desire and passion.
The first 10-15 minutes of the game looked much like the day before with the Cutters moving the ball around effortlessly and with urgency. Shortly thereafter, the Cutters struck first on a corner kick set piece. Doug V. lined up for the kick and then sent the ball into the box. Forward Derwydd M. was standing just outside of the six yard box as the ball approached him. One kick later, the Cutters were celebrating as they returned to their half of the field to make the score 1-0.
The Cutters have made a living this season scoring on corner kicks. Of their 10 goals this season, three of them have been scored off of a corner kick. The Cutters have two set pieces that they execute on corner kicks. Two have been scored off of their special play and one has been scored off of their normal play. The goal Derwydd M. scored was off of their normal play on Sunday.
“Over 80% of goals in this great game are scored off of set pieces,” Coach Nick Hannah said following the game. “It really is fun to watch them score in those situations.
“We are really good on corner kick set pieces, so we just try to take advantage of them.”
The rest of the game consisted of a fairly even game. The Cutters were still in control much of the game, but fatigue started to set in as the ball movement slowed down. The Westside United team had a couple of good opportunities on goal; however, the Cutters were just too much.
The game ended in a 1-0 win for the Cutters. The win brings their record to 3-2-2 on the season. The Cutters only have three games remaining on their regular season schedule; however, they are still committed to playing in two tournaments. They will play in the state-run Challenge Cup the weekend after Mother’s Day weekend where they will travel to Columbus, Indiana to face Dynamo Red (10 AM) and Muncie DC United (4 PM) on Saturday. On Sunday, they will play host to Columbus Express in Bloomington, IN at 4 PM. Should they advance, the Cutters will travel to Fort Wayne, IN on June 1-3. They will conclude their season in Westfield competing in the 20th Annual Habig Classic.
“We’re really excited about the Challenge Cup and we’re ready to face the challenge,” Coach Hannah said. “This team has shown me a lot of character and we are really starting to click.”
