INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The Cutters ’91 White team knew that they had a big challenge ahead of them. They knew that they were going to be facing stiff competition in “The Siege at St. Francis” tournament on the south side of Indianapolis, IN.

The competition?  Try three U17 ISL premier teams.  Try two of those teams competing in state cup.  The first team on the team’s slate was from the host club, St. Francis.

The first half consisted of St. Francis moving the ball all over the field, forcing the Cutters ’91 white team to play “monkey in the middle” with the Cutters squad serving as the monkey.  With the Cutters playing excellent defense, fending off shot after shot from St. Francis, they went into halftime tied at 0-0.

With about 10 minutes into the second half, the referee called a foul on St. Francis about 35-40 yards away from the Cutters’ goal, setting up a free kick. With sweeper Will K. out of town for the weekend, Cutters’ guest player Corbin R. set the ball up for the free kick. With a strong left foot, Corbin R. sent the ball soaring down the field and through the hands of the goalkeeper, into the back of the net to put the Cutters up 1-0.

With the newfound lead, Cutters head coach Nick Hannah added a stopper to play essentially six defenders in the back.  The Cutters played superb defense the rest of the way to solidify their first win of the tournament.

“We packed it in really the whole game,” Coach Hannah said following the game. “We made a minor adjustment on Thursday at training with our alignment in the middle of the field, and I think that really helped our defense out.

“Tonight, we certainly didn’t win the battle of possession, but we took advantage of the opportunities we had on goal. This was definitely a total-team effort; everyone stepped up and played hard today against, I believe, the toughest team we have played all season, including the games in Kentucky.”

The Cutters will get back to action Saturday morning at 9:15 AM against Hannah’s former club, Indy Burn.
