Cutters ’91 White (7-4-4) – 1
Indy Burn – 1
Goal Scorers: Derwydd M. (6)
June 2, 2007
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The Cutters ’91 White team came into
Saturday’s contest with a swagger as the Cutters beat a very talented
St. Francis squad just more than 12 hours before. On a hot, sun
drenched day, the Cutters faced another U17 ISL team in the Indy Burn
Magic.
For Cutters head coach Nick Hannah, this was a familiar foe as he used
to coach for Indy Burn and coached a few of the Magic’s players
in the past. That didn’t matter, however, as the Cutters’ coach
treated the game like any other game.
“It’s good to see some of my past players and guys I’ve known for awhile, but I’m more concerned with how well my team will play,” Coach Hannah said before the game.
With both teams playing with short rosters due to SATs and injuries, the game was heated and competitive. Both teams knew that to play for the chance to advance to the championship game, they had to get a win in this game to stay alive in their respective divisions.
The Cutters drew first blood in the first half as forward Derwydd M. found the ball inside the box to put it in the back of the net for his sixth of the season.
With about 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Magic were able to tie the game up after Cutters’ goalkeeper Corbin F. came out of goal. The Magic player was able to get around the Cutters’ goalkeeper and score.
The game ended without either team being able to produce any other scoring opportunities as the game was pretty evenly matched.
“Credit Indy Burn,” Coach Hannah said following the game. “I really thought they would tire late in the game due to no subs, but they actually got stronger.”
Hannah was pleased with his team’s efforts on the day, citing the Magic’s level of competition.
“We played a very tough team today. They were playing in too high of a league [ISL Premier] this season, but they were very good. We learned a lot from them this morning.
“I thought we played hard to the very end, even though we didn’t have our best stuff today.”
The Cutters were slated to play a league game in the afternoon back in Bloomington against the Terre Haute Flyers; however, since the Flyers only showed up with four players, the game was forfeited in the Cutters’ favor.
The Cutters will face Ft. Wayne Kickers Sunday morning at 11:45 AM for the right to advance to the finals Sunday afternoon.
