INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The Cutters ’91 White boys team traveled up to Indianapolis, Indiana to face a very talented South Central Select team from the Center Grove Soccer Club. Much like the weather, the game showed two different teams from the Cutters. The first half looked very sluggish and slow, whereas the second half showed the team that people around the Cutters Soccer Club are raving about.

Cutters Coach Nick Hannah knew from the moment he stepped out of his car that the day was going to be long, as evident from his team’s warm-up.
“The warm-up was less than desirable,” Coach Hannah said after the game concluded. “We have to come mentally prepared and ready to go.
“The warm-up is everything. I can tell if my team is ready to go just by observing the way they go about their business during the warm-up. Their body posture tells me a lot.”
Just what Hannah saw in the warm-ups is what the fans saw during the game as well. The Cutters weren’t moving to the ball and they weren’t moving the ball around like they are certainly capable of. The Cutters fell quickly into a 3-0 hole in the first half of the game on three goals that, arguably, they should have never allowed.
With about five minutes remaining in the first half, the fun began. Cutters forward Derwydd M. broke free up the middle towards the goal. A SCS player took him out from behind around 10 yards from the goal prompting a quick whistle from the referee. The referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot signaling a penalty kick. The SCS keeper was in on the tackle as well, was injured, and was ultimately replaced by their back-up goalkeeper. After the referee was able to sort out the situation, seconds later, he was showing the defender a red card, ejecting him from the game. Coach Hannah immediately gave out the instruction that PK Ace LJ S. would take the penalty kick. Seconds later, the score was 3-1.
The second half looked like night and day compared to the first half. With rain starting to sprinkle upon the field and with the Cutters playing a “man up” on SCS, they started to possess and move the ball more. They created a few more scoring opportunities throughout the second half, but with no luck. With around 10 minutes left in the game, SCS was able to put the game away with a nice goal from 20 yards out.
“We played alright,” Corbin F., the team’s starting goalkeeper and one of three team captains, said following the game. “From what I have seen in practices, we can play at a much higher level.
“I just feel that we have a lot more potential that we are showing out on the pitch.”
The team’s overall record now comes to 1-2-2. They were automatically awarded a “win” on Sunday afternoon after the GLSC U17AA team’s head coach forfeited the game due to lack of players to field a team.
While disappointed that they didn’t play well in the game, Corbin F. is focused on the future on how to make his team better and how to start the game stronger.
“We always seem to play much better in the second half. We need to play well all 90 minutes, not just the last 45,” the all-star goalkeeper said. “It just seems as though we are not getting pumped up before the start of the game, but I have personally been trying to think of ways to help us achieve that. Lately we have played with extreme mediocrity, just accepting the bare minimum, but this will no longer be accepted.
“Expect to see a whole different team in our next match.”
That next match is on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 4:00 PM in Terre Haute, IN, where they will face the Flyers. The Cutters will wrap up the weekend back at home in front of the home crowd for a 2:30 PM kickoff against the Westside United Soccer Club.
