Ft. Wayne Kickers – 4
Cutters ’91 White (7-5-3) – 0
Goal Scorers: None
June 3, 2007
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The Cutters ’91 White team came into Sunday morning’s game with a record of 1-0-1 in the tournament.
So did the Ft. Wayne Kickers.
Meaning?
The winner advances and the loser goes home.
This wasn’t unusual for the Cutters as they had a similar situation in their previous tournament, the Challenge Cup, hosted by Indiana Youth Soccer two weeks earlier. The Cutters lost to the Columbus Express 3-1 in that game. The Express ended up advancing to the finals, eventually losing.
The Cutters knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task this time around either as they were facing arguably the best team in their division. That didn’t seem to phase the boys as they came out fighting hard, creating several goal-scoring opportunities. The Kickers were creating several chances on goal as well.
The difference?
The Kickers took advantage of their opportunities with fantastic finishes and the Kickers’ goalkeeper seemed to find a way to thwart every opportunity the Cutters’ threw at him.
The two teams went into halftime with the Kickers leading the game 2-0. In the second half, the Cutters came out firing, but just coming up short on every opportunity.
“I was really pleased today, and I know the score doesn’t show it,” Cutters head coach Nick Hannah said following the game. “I don’t care about the score though. We created a lot of scoring opportunities and we were able to move the ball on a very talented and strong team.
“We just have to take advantage of the opportunities we get.”
Cutters goalkeeper Corbin F. made another “superman-like” save in the second half as he dove to his left to slap the ball behind the goal. After the save, the crowd, including the opposing coach, were screaming “nice save!”
The game ended with the Kickers blanketing the Cutters by a score of 4-0. The score may mislead a lot of outsiders; however, to the Cutters, the game was much closer than it appeared and that if they had finished better, the game would have been a completely different story.
The Cutters will complete their season next weekend in Westfield, Indiana as they will try their luck in the Habig Classic.
“I’m really excited about the Habig,” Hannah said. “It’s a very well-run tournament and I believe we’re going to have a lot of success in it. I know the boys are going to be fired up for it.”
The Cutters will play at Shamrock Springs on field #19 at 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM on Saturday. Then, the Cutters will play at 11:00 AM on Sunday morning in a rematch against the Westfield Tornados in a game where the Cutters lost 4-2. The championship game will be played at 3:30 PM at the Habig fields (#1).
