BLOOMINGTON, IN – On a hot Thursday evening, the Cutters ’91 White boys team stepped onto the field licking their lips. Soon after the game, they were salivating for ice cream.
The Cutters played host to the Terre Haute Flyers – Michel team in a rescheduled match that was supposed to be the team’s first game of the season, but due to rain, it had to be postponed. Just less than three weeks earlier, the two teams battled it out to a 4-2 Cutters’ win in Terre Haute. The results Thursday night were much the same as the Cutters rolled to a 5-2 victory.
It took just six minutes into the start of the game before L.J. S. notched one of his three goals on the afternoon. Then, just one minute later, L.J S.’s counterpart up top, Derwydd M. added to the mix with a goal of his own. Seven minutes into the game had the Cutters soaring at a 2-0 score. With four minutes left in the first half, L.J. S. scored his second goal to finish the half at 3-1.
The first ten minutes of the second half started off rather slow and stagnant. The Flyers were starting to have some success moving the ball around and getting chances on goal. Corbin F., the team’s all-star goalkeeper, defied physics as he made incredible save after incredible save. On one instance, Corbin F. was parallel to the ground with his back to the ground. He reached back behind his head to catch the ball with his fingertips to save a goal.
With about 15 minutes into the second half, the Cutters began to get their grove back by successfully lobbing the ball over the Flyer’s defensive back line to create a lot of chances on goal. One of those chances turned into a goal when Jacob D. notched his third goal of the season with an impressive finish.
L.J. S. started the game with a goal and ended it with a goal with around ten minutes left in the game to finish the scoring barrage at five goals for the Cutters. The game ended at 5-2.
Five goals are significant because Cutters Coach Nick Hannah promised his team at the start of the season that if they scored five goals in any one game, he would buy the whole team ice cream.
“I was getting nervous there in the second half,” Hannah said with a smile following the game. “They wouldn’t stop talking about getting that fifth goal.
“To mess with them, I told them that they had to win by five goals because I didn’t want them to settle and play poor defense. The Flyers are a great team and they can score at will from 25-30 yards out, so I didn’t want my defense to relax.
“They’ll get their ice cream, probably sometime next week after practice.”
The Cutters responded after a difficult, but successful weekend in the IYS 2007 Challenge Cup. They played with a vengeance and a will to succeed. Everyone found a way to contribute in the game.
“[Coaching Director] Tommy Berry asked me after the game who stood out to me, and without hesitation, it was Crespo [Matthew C.]. The kid has improved so much throughout the season and he is so good with his feet. He has arguably the best touch on the team and he was laying balls out to people in space like it was his hobby.
“He has the nickname ‘Crespo’ for a reason.”
The Cutters travel to Westfield on Sunday for a 1:00 PM kickoff against the Tornados. The next two weekends the team will be in tournaments.
