91 White vs. Express

CUTTERS ’91 WHITE LOSE IN A HEART BREAKER

Game 3 Box Score

Columbus Express – 3 Cutters ’91 White – 1 Goal Scorers: Thomas W. (3)

BLOOMINGTON, IN – One can feel the tension as they stepped foot onto the fields at Karst Farm Park located in Bloomington, IN.  If someone approached field #3 and observed the Cutters ’91 White team, they would probably assume that it was just another game.  Even though today’s game was a “championship-like” game, the Cutters were extremely relaxed and confident going in. Just 24-hours earlier, the Cutters were beating up on a very good ISL team, so they knew that if they played the way they played then, they will be punching their tickets to Ft. Wayne to play in the Challenge Cup Semi-finals, winning their division.

Less than four minutes into the game, midfielder Thomas W. broke free on the right side of the field and was able to muscle a shot past the Columbus Express goalkeeper to take a quick lead in this historic match-up.  The rest of the first half was dominated by the Cutters of Bloomington. Everything was going as planned as the players had smiles on their faces and discussing their plans for Ft. Wayne in two weeks.

With around 30 minutes left in the 2nd half, the referee called a foul on the Cutters inside the penalty box, resulting in a penalty kick. Moments later, the score was tied 1-1.  The call didn’t seem the phase the Cutters as they continued to battle and create opportunities.  However, 15 minutes later, the whistle blew again. The referee called a foul at the very top of the penalty box on the Cutters. There was a 10-15 second delay as no one seemed to know what happened, or who the referee made the call on.  The result was another penalty kick awarded to Columbus. Seconds later, the score was 2-1 in favor of Columbus.

After the penalty kick, Cutters Coach Nick Hannah wasn’t exactly the happiest coach at the complex.  Complaining that the call was weak, especially in a game of that magnitude, the Cutters began to lose their focus as they knew they had to win the game to advance.

With just a few minutes left in the game, Cutters goalkeeper Corbin F. came out of goal to try to make a play down the field to give his team a fighting chance on goal, but only resulting in giving Columbus their third goal on the day, all but punching their tickets for Ft. Wayne.

After the game was over, coach Nick Hannah was irate with the referees while making his case. As a result, Hannah was not available for comment following the game; however, we were able to reach him by phone later that evening.

“I’m extremely proud the way we played in that game, and the whole weekend for that matter,” Hannah said by phone. “Obviously that was a disappointing game and a very poorly managed game by the referee.  As a referee, you have to understand the magnitude of a match and to make two very mediocre foul calls inside the box is very poor judgment.

“But, that happens in sport. The referee called a great game, other than those two calls. He has a ton of potential, so hopefully he will learn from this experience. I just think two [penalty kicks] in one half when the other team is completely dominating the game is a bit much.

“Their coach after the game told me, ‘One [penalty kick] is OK, but two are too many!” and I agree with him. No one wants to win on penalty kicks.”

Coach Hannah seemed pleased of the way his team faired through adversity and believes that this experience will actually help his team down the road.

“It’s us against the world,” Coach Hannah said. “Everyone is against us, so we are going to use this as motivation for the future. I really do feel bad for the team we have to play next, as they are going to run into a buzz saw.

“Again, I couldn’t be more proud of my boys after this weekend. They fought hard and they are certainly winners in my book.”

The Cutters still have three league games left on the season, the first being this Thursday, May 24th at 7:00 PM in Bloomington, IN.  They will be playing in two more tournaments, “The Siege at St. Frances” on June 1-3 and the “Habig Classic” on June 9-10.
