On June 9-10, 2007, the Cutters ’91
White (U17) boys’ squad traveled to Westfield, IN to compete in
the 20th annual Habig Classic. The Cutters advanced out of pool
play after going 2-0-1 on a tie-breaker for the right to play in the
Habig U18 championship game. The Cutters beat the Bolingbrook Raiders
from Illinois in overtime by a score of 2-1 to take home the hardware
as the best of the best.
One of the stars of the tournament
was Linton native LJ Seever, who plays forward for the Cutters’ squad. Seever
was the leading scorer on a team that possesses a lot of firepower and talent
going into the weekend and he certainly didn’t disappoint throughout
the tournament, scoring three goals in all.
Seever tallied two goals in one
of the pool play games. The first goal came when one of his teammates played
a ball into space in front of the goal. Seever came flying out of no where
to slam the ball into the back of the net before his body slammed into the
net as well, flinging him into the ground hard with a thud. A few moments later,
Seever was being helped up by his teammates and was smiling after his first
goal of the game. His second came on a nifty cross from the left side
of the field. Seever happened to be in the right place at the right time
to bury the ball with a passion into the back of the net. Shortly after the
ball left his foot, Seever was driven yet again into the ground, but like the
brave soldier that he is, he bounced right back up and retreated with his teammates,
celebrating, back to their defensive side of the field.
“LJ [Seever] is a special
kid,” Cutters head coach Nick Hannah said in an interview. “You
can really tell that he loves to play the game and he has a passion for the
game that no one else on the team has. Passion, determination and the
will to succeed is not something a coach can teach.”
According to Coach Hannah, Seever
has come a long way from the start of the season to today. Seever has
always been a prolific goal scorer, but to Hannah, he has developed into much
more.
“LJ [Seever] has developed
more into a well-rounded forward,” Hannah said with a smile. “He
didn’t understand the position at the beginning of the season; he didn’t
understand how and where to make runs to create space for himself or his teammates.
“He gets it now, but I’m
excited to see him improve even more next spring, to take him to that next
level as a player. He was an absolute delight and an honor to coach him this
season.”
Seever looks to continue to play
soccer next spring with the Cutters Soccer Club in Bloomington, IN. Unfortunately,
his high school doesn’t offer a program for him to showcase his skills;
however, Seever looks forward to continuing to improve in any way he can because
he just loves the game.
